Mammoth Cave and Chappy Corp. honored

A total of 45 miles of new wire was brought into the cave. Six miles of Mammoth Cave tour routes are now lit with economical, environmentally efficient light.

Two found dead in Yorkshire cave

Phil Haigh from the Cave Rescue Organisation said the team of 20 rescuers gathered just after midnight and found the bodies in the cave at 3.20am.

"The cave system at Alum Pot contains stream passages and it looks as though the pair were trapped by rising water," he said. "It's quite tragic."

Group preparing for dive through Wakulla, Leon cave system

This weekend, a monumental dive will take place when McKinlay and fellow diver Jarrod Jablonski embark on a 7-mile, seven-hour underwater exploration, entering at Turner Sink on Saturday and emerging in Wakulla Springs on Sunday.

Russian special forces plan to storm doomsday sect cave

Hopefully this doesn't end like Waco. That aside, I think this headline has diplaced this one for the title of all time mostest bizarre headline.

The cave is said to have been divided into five cells, with one large 'room' set aside for prayers. The prayer room is also, according to the sect's founder Pyotr Kuznetsov, to be used for the eventual burial of the sect members. Kuznetsov is currently being treated for paranoid schizophrenia in an asylum in Penza, about 600 km (370 miles) southeast of Moscow.

Marengo Cave to be Featured in New Movie

Shooting at Marengo Cave for “Fire From Below” is expected to take approximately 22 hours for scenes that will comprise approximately 15 minutes of the finished film.

Bill Dever, associate producer of “Fire From Below” said, “Frankly, the caves will be featured so prominently that it's really too bad there’s not an Oscar for best location….Marengo would be a shoe-in.”

Black Spots Threaten Cave Drawings

This July, caretakers noticed new black spots covering some of the drawings. Samples taken from them showed the stains were caused by two fungi, ulocladium and gliomastix, that developed on top of a sublayer of existing bacteria.

Targeted biocides, which are substances that can kill bacteria, were tested on the samples. At a meeting this week, the Lascaux Caves International Scientific Committee approved the use of the localized biocides to treat the affected cave areas.

Rivers Do Not Act As Barriers For Groundwater Flow

The research team from the Geodynamics Department at the University of Granada and the Spanish Institute of Geology and Mining (which is part of the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science) has studied the hydrogeology of the karst aquifers in the Mediterranean climate. It has been found that, contrary to popular belief, rivers do not act as insurmountable barriers for groundwater flow.

Elderly Swiss cave diver goes missing in southern Greece

“It’s obviously glacier created,” Brown said of the cave. “It’s impossible to tell how old the cave actually is. Certainly, the last glacial period, from 10,000 to 1.5 million years ago, had a lot to do with its formation. We think that the clay deposited in the bottom half of the cave may have resulted from sediment that was carried into the cave by glacial melt water. Each band in the clay layer may represent a separate flooding and deposition event. There are a lot of them so this obviously went on for a very long time.

The Hawaiian lava cave microbes are particularly fond of those minerals in the caves which are made of rocks that have weathered away by water.

So if there were ever watery times on Mars, lava caves would probably have evidence of them, plus signs of any past life.
